Use an online whiteboard for teaching and tutoring

Updated

HiWhiteboard is a single-editor browser whiteboard. For teaching, that means you write and draw, and your students watch — on a classroom projector or through the screen sharing in the video meeting tool you already use. This guide walks through a typical lesson and is clear about what the tool does not provide.

Before the lesson

  1. Open the classroom whiteboard template and select Use this template. It has a topic header, a working area, a key points box, and practice questions.
  2. Change the topic and date. Delete the example equation or keep it as a model.
  3. Add any worksheet or diagram with Insert image. PNG, JPEG, and WebP files are supported within the image limits. You can also paste an image you copied, when your browser allows it.
  4. Check the toolbar shows Saved in this browser.

During the lesson

Showing the board online

Open the board in a browser tab, join your call, and use the meeting tool’s own screen or tab sharing. Students see your board but cannot edit it. HiWhiteboard does not include video calls, student accounts, class codes, live student editing, or grading.

After the lesson

Export the board as a PNG image to post in your class page, and download the editable file if you want to reuse or adapt it next time. A new copy of the template is better than erasing a board you may need again.

Questions about teaching with a whiteboard

How can I show a whiteboard in Google Meet?

On a computer, open HiWhiteboard in a browser tab and join your Google Meet call. Use Meet’s presentation controls to share the tab or window containing the board, when your meeting permissions allow it. Participants can view your drawing, but screen sharing does not let them edit your HiWhiteboard board.

How do I use a whiteboard for online teaching or tutoring?

Start with the classroom template, add the lesson topic or a problem image, and explain each step using text and drawing tools. Show the board through your meeting tool’s screen sharing, then export the notes after the lesson. HiWhiteboard does not provide video calls, student accounts, live student editing, or automatic grading.

Can I use an online whiteboard for math teaching?

You can write calculation steps, sketch diagrams, or annotate a problem image on HiWhiteboard. It is a general drawing and text tool, not a formula editor: it does not include LaTeX rendering, symbolic calculation, equation recognition, or automatic checking. Use it to explain your work visually, and export the notes when you finish.

Google Meet steps summarize Google's own help article, Present during a video meeting (checked October 14, 2026). Menus and permissions are controlled by Google and your organization and may change.
